Cathy Jean Maloney is a lifelong Chicago area resident and garden historian. Formerly a management consultant with a global technology consulting firm, Ms. Maloney now provides communications and project management services. As Senior Editor of Chicagoland Gardening magazine for twenty years, she explored hundreds of private and public regional gardens. She is the author of Chicago and Its Botanic Garden: The Chicago Horticultural Society at 125 (Northwestern University Press 2015); World's Fair Gardens, Shaping American Landscapes (University of Virginia Press 2012); The Gardener’s Cottage in Riverside, Illinois, (Columbia College Press 2010); Chicago Gardens: The Early History (University of Chicago Press 2008); and The Prairie Club of Chicago (Arcadia Press 2001). Her latest book, Olmsted's Riverside: Stewardship Meets Innovation in a Landmark Village, is due to be published in December, 2024 by Southern Illinois University Press.
She has written for numerous regional and national publications including Better Homes and Gardens, The American Gardener, Gardens Illustrated, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun Times, the Daily Herald, Public Garden magazine, and Landscape Architecture magazine. Ms. Maloney has a BBA from the University of Notre Dame, an MBA from Northwestern University, and a Masters in Biology - Environmental Sciences from Miami University of Ohio (2023).
With her family, she gardens and enjoys ownership and stewardship of The Gardener's Cottage in Riverside.
